What is an AED

Mar 9, 2021

The initials AED stand for the term Automated External Defibrillator.  This machine is a lightweight, battery operated, portable device that checks the hearts rhythm. If a person is suffering from a dangerously fast heart beat (ventricular tachycardia or V-tach) or a fast and irregular heartbeat     (ventricular fibrillation or V-fib) an AED can analyze and restore the heart to the proper rhythm.

These machines are remarkably simple to use and are safe to use on any age ranging from adult to infant. There are a few considerations when using an AED.  They can be used on snow or ice but can not be used in standing water.  If the patient or the user is in standing water, they must move.  If using an AED in extreme weather, it should be stored in a warm waterproof case.

Within the AED case should be a pair of scissors for cutting off clothing.  All clothing with metal should be cut off and removed including lingerie and shirts with metal snaps/buttons.  It should also include a cloth to wipe of the chest.  All people in cardiac arrest will be going into shock and their chest will be wet.  The chest will need to be wiped dry to make the electrode pads adhere to the chest correctly.  Also needed will be a razor to shave a hairy chest.  Chest hair will have to be removed before placing pads to the patient.
